Review Cursed
"Cursed (Beyond Beauty)" completely charmed me! It’s a Beauty and the Beast retelling, yes, but S.G. Bacon takes the familiar fairytale and spins it into something fresh and deeply engaging. While the core romance is definitely present—and delightfully done, I might add—the story isn't just about a blossoming relationship. It's a story about self-discovery, about confronting prejudice and societal expectations, and about the unwavering power of faith.
Bonnie, our heroine, isn't a damsel in distress. She’s spirited, independent, and fiercely loyal to her own principles. She's frustrated by the limitations of her town, Greymery, and its brooding Keeper, Killian, and she actively seeks adventure, a refreshing change from the passive heroines we sometimes see. Her quest to understand the mysterious golden wolf leads her down a path far more complex than she could have imagined, forcing her to challenge everything she thought she knew.
I loved the way the Christian message is woven into the narrative, not as a preachy afterthought, but as an integral part of Bonnie's journey. It’s a subtle but powerful presence, influencing her decisions, strengthening her resolve, and ultimately shaping her relationship with Killian. Their connection isn't just romantic; it’s a partnership forged through shared faith and a mutual desire for growth and understanding. Killian, initially presented as the gruff, emotionally distant Keeper, undergoes a significant transformation, shedding his "beastly" exterior to reveal a vulnerable and complex character wrestling with his own inner demons.
The world-building in Greymery is fantastic. It's a place that feels both familiar and fantastical, a setting that draws you in and holds your attention. The supporting characters are well-developed and memorable, adding depth and richness to the story. And the pacing is just right; Bacon skillfully avoids dwelling on unnecessary details, keeping the narrative tight and compelling. The shorter length is a definite plus, making it a perfect read for those with busy schedules, while still providing a satisfying and complete story.
While there are echoes of the classic fairy tale, "Cursed" feels entirely original. The author cleverly updates the narrative, focusing on internal struggles and character development rather than relying solely on external appearances. Bonnie's journey is one of self-acceptance and empowerment, highlighting the importance of inner beauty and strength. The author expertly balances the light-hearted and humorous moments with more serious themes, creating a story that resonates on multiple levels. This is a book I happily recommend to anyone looking for a captivating read with a strong female lead, a sweet romance, and a message of hope and faith. I'm already eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Beyond Beauty series!
